This is a collection of stories by, and usually about, river guides and outfitters. The tales focus on river related events that usually have little to do with whitewater. Many don't even take place on a river. All say a lot about the culture of guiding and the people attracted to wild places and the odd things that happen once they get there. These are the stories shared around a campfire after a day on the water. Some are funny, some sad, some quirky, but they all come from personal river experiences and lifelong friendships.
Join some guides on their day off when they decide to take a raft over a dam to see if they can make it right-side up. Dive into a vast garbage dump to find the $500 drysuits you threw out with the trash from a 21 day Grand Canyon trip. Try to explain how your employees set a Forest Service employee on fire during a torch-lit dance on a picnic table. Share an evening with an outfitter who is about to lose his business because one of his guests has disappeared on a hike and has been missing all night. Get ready to set your underwear on fire if precipitation stays below average because that?s how you end a drought. Take the Vice President of the United States down a river but never get him or anyone else wet. Be part of the wedding of two guides who really only wanted to sleep together but found themselves ?together forever.? Steal a bus and lead a wild chase down a mountain canyon highway looking for a group coming off the river. Drive home from the airport naked and try to sneak into the house without your wife noticing your lack of attire.
Not every story is about good times. A few are tributes to friends who are no longer with us but belong around our campfire. You probably never heard their names but you will enjoy meeting them here. They told great stories.
There is an odd thing that brings folks back for river trips. They usually come the first time because of the excitement of rapids and whitewater. They come back for another trip because of all the other stuff that happens. This book attempts to capture some of that magic, the memories and good times running a river with friends fosters.
Halfway to Halfway Other River Stories eBook Dick Linford Bob Volpert
This book is a very humorous and well-written set of river stories assembled and written by two seasoned white water river outfitters. Some of the stories brought tears of joy and remembrance of trips that I've taken back in the day. There are several life-lessons embedded in the interpersonal interactions and antics of river guides and patrons who shared a love of the wilderness and the power that rivers have in influencing those of us who have had the privilege of being intimate with the riverSabbadini

Halfway to Halfway Other River Stories eBook Dick Linford Bob Volpert Reviews
any book centered around Idaho whitewater rivers can't be bad. witty stories and touching recollections.
All the stories and antidotes by Jerry "Snake" Hughes are funny; you will laugh until you cry!!!!!!!!!
Very nice to read stories you can relate to and the collection is one of them.
Great read about river rafting. I didn't know anything about the subject but the idea of several short stories to give one an overall view of the activity was appealing to me.
This is a collection of stories told by people who have made a living running rivers in the Great American West. The stories, written and compiled by river runners Dick Linford and Bob Volpert, cover events and personalities over some forty years. Always interesting, often funny, and sometimes poignant, if you enjoy colorful characters and outdoor adventure as we do, you'll like this book a lot. Jim and Jeanne Clarke, Tucson, AZ.
It's no accident that Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi" still holds its magic after 150 years. River guides are often great characters--living larger than life--and provide abundant material for stories; their day-to-day experiences on and off the rivers are more often than not fascinating. This is a wonderful collection of river guide stories, well-written and alternately hilarious and poignant. This joins a growing body of river stories, but with a bit more of a Pacific Northwest and California focus. I'll be waiting eagerly for volume II.
The guides who edited this book (and contributed many of the stories) mostly run rivers in Oregon, so most of the stories relate to experiences in Oregon (there is one Grand Canyon story, one about attending a UC-Berkeley football game). None of the stories (if I recall correctly) concern running big water in a boat (but there is one about swimming such a rapid). Most of the stories are relatively or quite short; they about about guides' experiences. Lots to enjoy here, even if you've never run a river in Oregon. The story about George H.W. Bush "running" the Rogue is a real hoot!
OK, now that I got my book, I can weigh in. It is a wonderful collection of stories that hits all the buttons familiar to river folk--the funny personalities, the humor of unexpected situations, the pit in your stomach before running the big drop, the calm and beauty of the canyon, the terror when things go truly wrong, and in the end, the humanity of it all. I devoured the book in two nights straight. The fact that many authors contributed adds to the charm--the voice and perspective rotates as you move through the book. You can also flip open to any page and read the book in random-access fashion, since most of the stories are 5 or so pages long. I didn't want it to end. Hopefully this book sets off a minor avalanche of more river stories into Dick and Bob's capable hands. Thanks guys.
