Skipper Alex von Strada is one of the Fleet’s highest achieving officers, commanding the corvette Minnow with a company of eccentric officers and last-chance crew sent to him for rehab. The updated 2nd Edition includes the free first chapter of Fourth Fleet Irregulars Book 2 Karadon.

After a PR disaster has activists and media storming the Admiralty gates, First Lord Dix Harangay sends Minnow out on a makework patrol. Inspector Mako Ireson goes with them to investigate what’s really going on. Mako has never been on a starship before. He can’t tell port from starboard, doesn’t know what the 0-G sign means at freefall hatchways, and may need to change his underwear after the launch.

Nobody is expecting that the “mission zero” they've been sent on will turn into a real operation. When it does, the Minnow’s crew has to rise to the challenge and justify their skipper’s faith in them.

This is the first mission of the legendary Fourth Fleet Irregulars, the unit you send for when you need a miracle.

For Mako Ireson, it will be the adventure of a lifetime.

Mission Zero Fourth Fleet Irregulars Book 1 eBook S J MacDonald

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well created. The plot was interesting and very different from alot of what I have read in this field of books. Most of all, it was a fun read. I look forward to a sequal. I would fully recommend this book without reservations. It is not a high tech book, but character driven. So, buy it, sit back, plug in your ipod, have some chips and soda next to you, make sure the lighting is good, and enjoy.

As usual, please donate used books to your library. In today times, money is tight, and many can no longer afford to purchase books anymore. I speak of course to paper books.

Mission Zero Fourth Fleet Irregulars Book 1 eBook S J MacDonald Reviews

I'll start off with the fact that I enjoyed and liked the novel. However, there are some very real problems with it that will deter people from enjoying it to it's fullest.

Cons -
Dialogue is stilted and obviously scripted at times.
While the characters are each independent, many of the military characters are used as a mouthpiece for some of the dialogue, which needs to be conveyed, but done in such a way that the dialogue seems to be from one source instead of many different sources.
The science of the book is low key and not hard sci-fi at all which is usually a plus but in this case, it leads to some areas where obvious impossibilities occur. One such example is the use of radar in supra-light travel. There aren't many of these issues but they are jarring and detract from the story when they occur.
While this is a military setting, the feel is more that of a civilian organization that is para-military in nature.

As for the pros, I will leave that to each individual reader to decide. If you are looking for something that is light-hearted or a little different from the norm, this could very well be for you.
This is NOT a fun tale. This is not an action packed tale. What this is is the literal setting of the scene of a Captain and his crew of irregular but highly talented individuals. A lot of people have issues with this book for a couple of reasons that I'll describe immediately.

A) the book is slow. There is NO major action with in it. It instead reads as a series of examples of spacer culture/life in this universe through stories told to the main character while he is experiencing his first trip into outer space. This is okay for me though because it did a really good job of explaining their universe. A lot of books don't even cover a tenth of what this does in terms of normal-ship going policies. Simple things like explaining gravity on ships often get short thrift. This one goes full bore, as long as you accept that full-bore also includes really NON-scientific reasonings sometimes. This is not a scientifically accurate book, but it attempts to persuade the reader (through the eyes of an equally ignorant point of view) that this universe is "real"

B) Apparently it annoys military servicemen who want a book that's pure milspec. That's unfair to this book because it's NOT about military culture, it's about the rejects and individuals who often flunk out of the military due to an inflexible approach to what constitutes a good sailer/soldier/member. This is important to understand because for many reasons the military functions like it does because an individual approach to every crewman is not a feasible reality. However this book isn't commenting on whether or not that is good or bad, indeed it specifically goes out of it's way to NOT comment upon usual military experiences. That said, accept that the circumstances within this book are hard for a lot of those people to accept due to their own past. This is not a non-military book. It's also not a military book. It's somewhere inbetween, similar to Battlestar Galactica's extremely informal approach to command.

C) The story is unbelievable. - This is the one I find ridiculous. The idea that over-reactiveness 'DOESN'T' occur in media and news today is abbbbsurd.

D) Anticlimactic - This is true, this in a lot of ways was more the first half of a story, with no epic conclusion. There IS a conclusion, but it's not handled in a way to really make everyone feel it. Perhaps the weakest point of the book is literally the last 5 pages, despite the fact that it still made me want to read more.

Overall I thought this was a good introduction, it 'showed' me the characters without revealing too much about them and did so in a way that built up the story and launched us into a universe I want more of.
I must say that this book is excellent, especially for the price.

I'm going to go off on a tangent here, but I was very impressed by the lack of DRM coupled with the disclaimer not to give a copy of the book to other people. This is a tactic that works just as well as DRM, but is less of a pain for legitimate customers who want to use other devices to read books too.

Now for the book
I just laughed the whole way through. I can see this all happening, and the FTL physics seems pretty good. I'm not sure how they avoid a load of time dilation for fast STL travel, but aside from that, it's pretty consistent.

The plot is as such

An unfair court martial puts one of Alex's crew in jail. They can't let him out for political reasons, but they set it up so the prisoners can go on the ship anyway. A dumb PR desk jockey tells the media it's classified, rather than explain what's going on. The media goes bat turd crazy, and begins to throw wild allegations that the prisoners will serve for unsafe duty. Attempts to resolve the problem are not believed, and make it worse, while the crew prepares for launch and a prison inspector agrees to go with them, to help with PR and to make sure the prisoners are treated better. They head out to patrol while the prison inspector learns about space and the people who work there. He learns aliens are real, but that they can't tell anyone without causing a panic, since the first ones found were homicidal. The secret is kept simply by the fact that no one believes the people who say they exist. (which is too possible for comfort!) They eventually find a drug cache while on patrol and succeed in capturing the culprits. However, the media goes even more nuts since the prisoners cater to the media with all sorts of false allegations and no one believes the drug bust was accidental either.

All loose threads are wrapped up by the end of the book, but its excellence encourages you to read the next one anyway.

Possible side effect Increased cynicism toward the media, but that's really a good thing anyway.
